Malaysian haze worsens: 22 areas hit unhealthy air quality levels

Air quality deteriorated significantly across Malaysia on Monday, with nearly two dozen areas recording unhealthy pollution levels as haze blanketed the country. Kota Tinggi in Johor emerged as the worst-affected location, registering an Air Pollution Index (API) reading of 170, well into the unhealthy category that poses risks to public health.

The widespread haze affected 22 areas nationwide, according to environmental monitoring data. Johor bore the brunt of the pollution, with multiple monitoring stations across the state reporting elevated API readings. The unhealthy air quality prompted health advisories for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Singapore has monitored similar haze events in recent years as transboundary air pollution from regional sources periodically affects air quality across Southeast Asia. The Malaysian authorities have not yet issued specific guidance on the cause of the current haze episode or projected duration.

Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors where possible. Regional meteorological services typically attribute such events to a combination of factors including local emissions and atmospheric conditions that trap pollutants near the surface.
