Malaysian lawmakers call for stronger global action on Myanmar crisis

Members of parliament Tarmizi and Leong have called on Malaysia's government to take a more proactive stance in addressing the Myanmar conflict, emphasising the need for comprehensive global action to resolve the humanitarian crisis.

The two lawmakers stressed that merely responding to symptoms of the conflict—such as the influx of refugees into neighbouring countries—would prove insufficient without tackling underlying causes. They urged the government to engage with international partners in pushing for sustainable political solutions in Myanmar.

Their appeal comes as the regional refugee crisis has intensified, with displaced persons continuing to cross borders into neighbouring countries including Malaysia. The ongoing instability in Myanmar has displaced hundreds of thousands, creating pressure on host nations already grappling with resource constraints.

The parliamentarians' statement reflects growing concern among Malaysian legislators about the humanitarian toll of the Myanmar conflict and its ripple effects across Southeast Asia. Their call underscores the need for coordinated international diplomatic efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.
