The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers is calling on Asean member states to accelerate implementation of measures to combat transboundary haze, arguing that clean air should not be treated as a luxury commodity.

KUALA LUMPUR — The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has called for Asean nations to strengthen and expedite regional efforts to eliminate transboundary haze, emphasizing that access to clean air represents a fundamental necessity rather than an optional amenity.
The manufacturing sector body has urged member states within the Southeast Asian bloc to establish concrete, measurable targets and timelines for reducing air pollution events that regularly affect the region. The push comes as Malaysia continues to grapple with recurring episodes of hazardous air quality, which impacts industrial operations and public health across the country.
FMM's position reflects growing industry concern over the economic and operational consequences of prolonged air pollution cycles. Manufacturing facilities face disruptions during severe haze events, while workers' productivity and health are compromised by poor air conditions. The federation argues that coordinated regional action is essential to address sources of transboundary pollution affecting multiple Asean countries simultaneously.
The call highlights the need for deeper commitment from all member states to implement forest management practices, regulate agricultural burning, and monitor industrial emissions that contribute to the region's recurring haze problem. FMM has stressed that without accelerated progress on a comprehensive haze-elimination roadmap, the region risks sustained economic and health impacts.
