Malaysian students show strong character traits beyond PISA test scores

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has sought to reframe the discussion surrounding Malaysia's performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), emphasising that standardised test rankings do not capture the full picture of student development.

According to Sidek, Malaysian students have been found to display above-average perseverance, curiosity, and resilience—character attributes that extend beyond what conventional academic metrics measure. The minister's comments reflect a broader recognition among education policymakers that holistic student development encompasses qualities essential for success in an increasingly complex global environment.

The PISA assessment, conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, measures reading, mathematics, and science literacy among 15-year-old students across participating nations.
