KOTA BHARU — A Malaysian national spending time in Sungai Golok found himself unable to leave the border town after explosions prompted Thai authorities to seal off the area late into the night.
The visitor, who had travelled to the popular cross-border destination, was caught amid heightened security measures implemented following the blasts. The incident highlighted the security challenges that periodically affect the volatile region bordering Malaysia.
Sungai Golok, located in Narathiwat Province, is a frequent destination for Malaysian shoppers and tourists drawn by its commercial activities and proximity to the Malaysian border. However, the town has experienced recurring security incidents related to the broader insurgency affecting southern Thailand.
The lockdown prevented the stranded Malaysian from returning home, leaving him waiting for authorities to lift restrictions and restore normal movement across the border. It remained unclear at the time what triggered the explosions or whether they were connected to the wider security situation in the region.
Malaysian officials were reportedly coordinating with Thai counterparts regarding the situation affecting the citizen.
