Malaysian Transport Authority Halts Chery Omoda 5 Approvals Over Axle Defect

Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) has moved to suspend type approvals for the Chery Omoda 5 after investigating a rear axle separation incident, according to regulatory filings released this week.

In addition to halting approval for the Chinese-manufactured sport utility vehicle, JPJ has ordered an immediate freeze on new registrations of the model while authorities conduct a detailed technical inspection. The suspension follows the documented case of a rear axle detaching from the vehicle during operation, raising concerns about the structural integrity of the affected units.

The technical audit will examine the design, manufacturing standards, and installation procedures for the Omoda 5's rear axle assembly. JPJ officials have indicated that the vehicle's type approval will remain suspended until the inspection is completed and any identified defects are remedied by the manufacturer.

Chery, one of China's largest independent automakers, has not issued a public statement regarding the suspension. The Omoda 5 has been available in the Malaysian market for several months and is positioned as an affordable mid-size SUV option.

Authorities have advised existing owners of the Chery Omoda 5 to exercise caution and contact authorized dealerships for guidance. The suspension underscores the JPJ's commitment to vehicle safety standards and consumer protection in Malaysia's automotive market.
