Malaysians urged to maximise tax reliefs ahead of 2027 filing season

KUALA LUMPUR — Tax experts are reminding Malaysian workers and business owners to review available tax reliefs when preparing their 2027 income tax returns, as the government continues to offer various deductions and exemptions aimed at easing the financial load on individuals and enterprises.

The array of tax reliefs available ranges from personal deductions for medical expenses and education fees to investment-related incentives and business allowances. Taxpayers who are unfamiliar with these provisions risk missing opportunities to legitimately lower their assessable income, resulting in higher tax liabilities than necessary.

Both salaried employees and self-employed individuals should maintain comprehensive records of qualifying expenses and investments throughout the year to substantiate claims during the filing process. Common reliefs include contributions to approved retirement schemes, life insurance premiums, and donations to approved charitable organisations.

First-time filers and those experiencing changes in employment status or income sources are particularly encouraged to seek clarity on eligibility criteria for specific reliefs. The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (LHDN) maintains detailed guides on its website and through its taxpayer assistance centres to help residents understand their entitlements.

Taxpayers who file their returns accurately and claim all applicable reliefs not only fulfil their civic obligations but also ensure they do not overpay taxes owed to the government.
