Male Namibian cheetah dies at Kuno National Park; India's population falls to 55

Gaurav, a male cheetah translocated from Namibia, succumbed to illness at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, marking a setback for India's ambitious cheetah reintroduction initiative. The animal had been receiving veterinary care since falling ill on September 12 and did not survive treatment. His death brings India's total cheetah population to 55 animals, down from the previous count. The Kuno reintroduction project, launched to restore cheetahs to Indian wildlife after the species was declared extinct in the country in 1952, has seen mixed fortunes since the arrival of the first cohort of cats from Namibia and South Africa. While some animals have adapted successfully to their new habitat, others have faced health challenges in the transition to the Indian environment.
