Man arrested as authorities seize half-million pesos in smuggled cigarettes

A buy-bust operation conducted by law enforcement in Puerto Princesa City on Tuesday resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old man and the recovery of a substantial cache of suspected smuggled cigarettes, authorities said.
The suspect was taken into custody after allegedly selling a box of New Berlin cigarettes containing 50 reams to an undercover police officer for ₱20,000, prompting officers to move in and apprehend him. Police subsequently seized approximately ₱560,000 worth of cigarettes believed to have entered the country illegally.
The operation underscores intensified enforcement actions against cigarette smuggling networks operating in the Philippines. The illicit cigarette trade has long been a concern for authorities, with contraband products typically sold at significantly lower prices than legally imported brands, undercutting legitimate businesses and depriving the government of tax revenue.
The arrested individual is currently being held pending further investigation and the filing of appropriate charges. The seized cigarettes have been turned over to relevant customs and excise authorities for processing and documentation as evidence.
