The suspect was taken into custody in the Mawathagama area of Homagama on the evening of October 14 following an investigation by officers from the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB). Police alleged that the individual operated a Facebook business account through which he solicited payments from vehicle owners wishing to advertise their cars for sale online.
According to investigators, the suspect collected money from multiple complainants but failed to provide the promised advertising services. The scheme exploited the popularity of Facebook as a marketplace platform for vehicle sales in Sri Lanka, where private sellers frequently use social media to reach potential buyers.
The CCIB has not yet disclosed the total value of funds allegedly defrauded or the number of victims involved in the case. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter as they work to identify additional complainants and recover funds where possible.
The arrest highlights growing concerns over online fraud schemes targeting Sri Lankan consumers through social media platforms. Police have advised members of the public to exercise caution when conducting transactions through Facebook and other online channels, and to verify the legitimacy of business accounts before transferring money.
