Man arrested in Hyderabad for extorting ₹38 lakh via honey trap scheme

Police in Hyderabad have arrested a young man accused of running a sophisticated honey trap racket targeting a senior citizen over an extended period. The suspect allegedly lured the 70-year-old victim through false promises before subjecting him to a series of extortion attempts.

According to law enforcement officials, the accused leveraged compromising situations and threats of public exposure to coerce repeated payments from the elderly man. The victim, facing persistent intimidation and fear of social stigma, handed over substantial sums of money to the accused over time.

Investigations revealed that the total amount extorted from the victim reached approximately ₹38 lakh. The modus operandi mirrors other honey trap frauds that have surfaced in urban centres across India, wherein criminals pose as romantic interests to compromise victims before demanding money.

The arrest comes as police intensify crackdowns on extortion networks targeting vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens. Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution when interacting with unknown individuals online and to report suspicious activities to law enforcement immediately.
