Man Declared Dead in 1999 Fraud Found Alive in Agra 27 Years Later

Tarachand Sharma, who had been officially pronounced dead through forged documentation in connection with a fraud case filed in Agra in 1999, was spotted operating a scooter in the Gandhi Nagar locality on February 6, 2026. The discovery came after the complainant in the original case photographed Sharma and submitted photographic evidence to the court.

Sharma's supposed death had been documented via a fraudulent death certificate, which allowed his name to be removed from active criminal records and effectively erased from legal proceedings. The reappearance of a living individual marked as deceased in official records highlighted gaps in verification procedures spanning nearly three decades.

Sharma surrendered voluntarily before the court on Monday following the photographic evidence presented by the complainant. However, magistrate officials rejected his bail plea and ordered him remanded in custody pending trial.

The case has raised questions about document verification protocols in criminal records management and the persistence of fraud-related cases in Uttar Pradesh's judicial system. Authorities have initiated investigation into the original forged death certificate and potential accomplices involved in the 1999 fraud scheme.
