Man pleads insanity in stabbing case; ordered for psychiatric evaluation

Shahrul Shahrizal Che Shaari entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity in connection with the alleged stabbing of his wife and assault on his mother-in-law. Following the plea, the court referred the accused for psychiatric assessment to determine his mental state at the time of the alleged offences.

The one-month evaluation will be conducted at a psychiatric hospital, where medical professionals will assess whether Shahrul was mentally fit to stand trial and capable of understanding the nature of the charges against him. Such psychiatric reports are routinely ordered by Malaysian courts in cases where mental illness is raised as a potential defence.

Insanity defences in Malaysia require evidence demonstrating that the accused did not know the nature or quality of their act, or did not know it was wrong, due to mental disorder at the material time. The psychiatric evaluation will be a critical factor in determining the viability of the defence and the court's subsequent proceedings.

The case remains ongoing, with the results of the psychiatric assessment expected to significantly influence the trajectory of the trial.
