Man sentenced for car rental scam defrauding victims of $176,000

A man has received a custodial sentence after being convicted of operating a car rental fraud scheme through the online marketplace Carousell, resulting in substantial financial losses to victims across the region.

The offender, who targeted prospective car renters through the platform, defrauded multiple victims of a combined amount exceeding $176,000. The scam involved the rental of vehicles under false pretences, with victims losing money after being induced to make advance payments or deposits.

During court proceedings, 35 additional charges involving losses of $108,317.92 were taken into consideration when determining the sentence. The consideration of these charges reflected the scope and scale of the fraudulent operations conducted by the accused.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about fraud on popular online marketplaces in Southeast Asia. Authorities have advised consumers to exercise caution when conducting transactions on such platforms, particularly for high-value items or services, and to verify the legitimacy of sellers before making payments.
