Karnataka's Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy has advocated for mandatory training requirements for all elephants taking part in the Jamboo Savari procession, a centrepiece event of the annual Mysuru Dasara festival. The proposal seeks to institutionalise animal care standards during the high-profile parade that draws thousands of spectators.
Under the proposed framework, forest department officials would oversee the training of elephants designated for the procession. The initiative emphasises the role of experienced elephant caretakers and Kavadis—traditional elephant handlers—in implementing these training protocols to ensure proper animal handling and welfare.
The measure reflects ongoing efforts to balance cultural traditions with contemporary animal welfare considerations. The Jamboo Savari procession, featuring caparisoned elephants and elaborate tableaux, remains one of India's most significant festival events, drawing international attention to Mysuru's heritage celebrations.
Forest officials would be tasked with monitoring compliance with the training standards, ensuring that all participating elephants meet specified criteria before being cleared for the procession. The proposal aims to create a structured framework for animal welfare during the event.
