MANSALAY, ORIENTAL MINDORO — For decades, Mangyan children living in isolated mountain settlements throughout southern Oriental Mindoro faced formidable obstacles in pursuing secondary education. The distance alone presented a significant challenge, with some students required to walk several hours daily to access classroom instruction.

The Mangyan Education Center Inc. (MEC), located in Barangay Bait-Panaytayan, Mansalay, has emerged as a transformative initiative addressing these longstanding educational disparities. By establishing a facility within reach of indigenous communities, the center has effectively eliminated the punishing daily commutes that previously deterred many from continuing their studies.

The center represents a critical intersection of educational access and cultural identity, providing Mangyan learners with opportunities to pursue secondary education while remaining connected to their communities and heritage. Educational officials view the facility as a model for reaching underserved populations in geographically challenging regions.

The initiative underscores broader efforts to expand educational infrastructure across the Calabarzon and Mimaropa regions, addressing persistent gaps in school accessibility that have historically disadvantaged indigenous and remote populations in the Philippines.
