Manila pledges non-interference in BARMM parliament leadership race

COTABATO CITY—The national government will not intervene in the selection of the chief minister and other key officials for the inaugural regular session of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao parliament, according to Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento.

Sarmiento issued the assurance Monday, emphasizing the central government's commitment to allowing the autonomous region's elected lawmakers to proceed with leadership elections without external pressure or interference.

The statement comes as members of parliament prepare for their first regular session, with the leadership contest expected to take place within the next two weeks. The vote will determine who assumes critical positions in BARMM's legislative body.

The peace adviser's pronouncement reflects Manila's commitment to the autonomy framework established under the Bangsamoro Organic Law, which grants the region greater control over its internal governance and decision-making processes.

The election of BARMM's parliamentary leadership is viewed as a significant milestone for the region's political maturation and institutional development since the creation of the autonomous government.
