MANILA — Manila's influenza-like illness tally reached 2,692 cases as of late October, with health authorities documenting a sharp rise in respiratory complaints coinciding with broader national trends.
The capital city logged nine new suspected flu cases on October 26 alone, adding to the climbing caseload that reflects a significant surge in respiratory infections throughout the country. National data compiled by the Department of Health indicated more than 11,000 ILI cases were recorded nationwide during the same period, representing an eight percent increase compared to previous figures.
Health Secretary Edwin Mercado attributed the uptick to seasonal factors and increased community transmission. Officials stressed the importance of preventive measures, including respiratory hygiene and vaccination, as health facilities brace for continued patient volume during the height of the flu season.
The Department of Health continues monitoring the situation and has advised healthcare providers to remain vigilant for severe respiratory cases. Residents are encouraged to seek medical attention for persistent flu-like symptoms and to practice basic infection control measures to limit further spread in their communities.
