Manila to build three flood retention basins at Luneta Park
The Department of Public Works and Highways plans to construct three water detention basins within Luneta Park to help alleviate severe flooding in Manila. The project is expected to begin next year following an agreement between the DPWH and the National Parks Development Committee.

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will establish three large temporary water detention basins at Luneta Park as part of efforts to reduce flooding across Manila, according to Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon.
Dizon disclosed that the DPWH and the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) have reached an agreement on the flood mitigation initiative during recent discussions. The construction of the detention basins is scheduled to commence in the coming year.
The project aims to capture and temporarily store floodwaters during heavy rainfall and storm surge events, thereby reducing inundation in surrounding areas of the capital. By utilizing the park's space for water management, authorities hope to complement existing drainage infrastructure and provide additional flood relief capacity.
The initiative reflects the government's ongoing efforts to address recurring flooding problems in Metro Manila, which regularly experiences water backup during the monsoon season and tropical storms. Officials indicated that the detention basins will serve as a strategic component of the broader flood control strategy for the city.
