Manila to build three water detention basins in Rizal Park

MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) have greenlit plans to construct three water detention basins in Rizal Park as part of efforts to reduce flooding incidents across Manila, according to Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon.
The detention basins are intended to capture and temporarily store excess rainwater during heavy precipitation events, helping to mitigate the overflow that frequently inundates Manila's streets and neighborhoods. Construction of the facilities is scheduled to begin in the coming year.
The project represents a collaborative approach to addressing Manila's persistent flooding challenges by utilizing existing public spaces. Officials have not yet disclosed the specific dimensions, capacity, or precise timeline for completion of the three basins.
Rizal Park, located in the heart of Manila, was selected for the infrastructure development due to its size and strategic location within the city's drainage system. The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to improve urban water management and disaster resilience in the capital region.
