Manila to launch España Boulevard cross-drainage project in September
The Philippines' Public Works Department will begin construction on a critical flood-mitigation infrastructure project in España, Manila, next month. The cross-drainage system aims to redirect floodwater toward the Pasig River, offering relief to one of the capital's most flood-vulnerable districts.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon announced Tuesday that the cross-drainage initiative along España Boulevard will commence operations in September, marking a significant step in the government's efforts to combat persistent flooding in Manila's low-lying areas.
The project is designed to intercept and channel stormwater away from residential and commercial zones, redirecting it toward the Pasig River. Officials have identified the España corridor as particularly vulnerable to inundation, especially during the southwest monsoon season when heavy rainfall exacerbates drainage challenges across the metropolis.
The infrastructure initiative represents part of a broader strategy by the Department of Public Works and Highways to upgrade Metro Manila's aging drainage systems and reduce the frequency and severity of flooding events that regularly disrupt daily life and commerce in the region.
The announcement comes amid ongoing concerns about water management in Metro Manila, where inadequate drainage infrastructure and waterway congestion continue to compound flood risks during heavy monsoon rains.
