Manila Water ramps up treatment capacity ahead of El Niño season

Manila Water is intensifying preparations for potential water supply challenges during the El Niño season by operating all six of its active water treatment plants at full capacity. The facilities collectively process 1,980 million liters of water daily, serving customers across Metro Manila and Rizal province.

The water utility is also accelerating the completion of two major treatment facilities as part of its infrastructure expansion program. These additional plants are expected to further enhance the company's ability to maintain round-the-clock water supply to its 1.8 million customers during periods of low rainfall and reduced water availability.

The El Niño phenomenon typically brings extended dry periods to the Philippines, increasing pressure on water supply systems. By maximizing existing treatment capacity and advancing new facility development, Manila Water aims to ensure adequate water availability across its service area despite anticipated weather-related challenges.

The utility's preparedness measures are aligned with broader efforts to strengthen Metro Manila's water security infrastructure during the dry season. Officials stressed that the dual approach of optimizing current resources while expanding long-term capacity addresses both immediate and sustained water supply needs across the eastern zones of the metropolitan region.
