Manipal Healthcare charts expansion with greenfield projects

Manipal Healthcare is pivoting towards organic expansion, planning to derive roughly 80% of new bed capacity from greenfield hospital projects rather than through strategic acquisitions. This shift in growth strategy underscores the healthcare operator's confidence in constructing purpose-built facilities tailored to its operational requirements and quality standards.

The company's financial trajectory shows mixed signals heading into FY26. Revenue is expected to surge 25% year-on-year, boosted significantly by the integration of Sahyadri Healthcare into its portfolio. However, net profit after tax (PAT) is projected to decline 15%, weighed down by higher interest costs on increased debt, elevated depreciation charges from expanded assets, and a larger tax burden.

Despite the PAT compression, operational metrics paint a more encouraging picture. Average revenue per occupied bed (ARPOB) is forecast to rise 9%, indicating improved pricing power and operational efficiency across the existing bed base. This metric improvement suggests the company is successfully monetising its current capacity while managing the integration of recent acquisitions.

The balance between greenfield expansion and the Sahyadri integration reflects Manipal's dual-track approach to scaling operations. While the acquisition provides immediate revenue uplift and network expansion, new hospital construction offers long-term margin potential and greater operational control. The company's ability to execute this mixed strategy while managing debt obligations will be crucial in determining whether near-term profitability pressures ease over subsequent fiscal years.
