Manipur death toll reaches 306 as ethnic violence persists since May 2023

Manipur's Home Minister disclosed the grim toll of ongoing communal violence during an assembly session, revealing that over 18 months of conflict have claimed 306 lives with another 49 people still unaccounted for. The clashes originated on May 3, 2023, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to counter the Meitei community's push for Scheduled Tribes classification. The march escalated into widespread violence between the valley-based Meitei majority and the hill-dwelling Kuki-Zo communities, fracturing the state along ethnic lines.

The prolonged violence has displaced thousands of residents, destroyed homes and infrastructure, and created deep communal fractures in Manipur. Efforts to restore peace through dialogue have faced persistent challenges as tensions between the two communities remain high.
