Manipur violence drove bulk of South Asia displacement in 2023

The northeastern Indian state of Manipur was responsible for approximately 67,000 displacements out of roughly 69,000 recorded across South Asia last year, underscoring the severity of the ongoing communal violence in the region.

The findings highlight how the ethnic tensions between the Meitei-dominated plains and Kuki-Zo dominated hills in Manipur have created a humanitarian crisis of significant proportions. Since violence escalated in May 2023, tens of thousands of residents have been forced to abandon their homes, seeking refuge in makeshift camps and shelter centers.
