CALAPAN CITY — Mansalay municipality in Oriental Mindoro has formally pledged to transition away from fossil fuels and accelerate its adoption of renewable energy sources. The commitment, codified through Municipal Resolution No. 429-2026, marks the town's official recognition as a fossil fuel-free and renewable energy municipality.
Energy advocates have lauded the declaration as a significant milestone in efforts to reduce Mindoro's reliance on conventional oil-based power systems. The resolution signals the municipal government's intent to embed renewable energy infrastructure and practices into local governance and community operations.
The initiative comes as the Philippines intensifies its climate action agenda and seeks to increase the share of renewable energy in its national power mix. Mindoro, an island resource-rich region, has emerged as a potential hub for renewable energy development, with solar and wind power initiatives gaining traction across various municipalities.
Municipality officials are expected to develop an implementation roadmap detailing the integration of solar, wind, and other renewable technologies into public facilities and municipal operations. The transition is anticipated to reduce operational costs while advancing environmental sustainability goals at the local level.
