Maran seeks review of proposed animal cruelty prevention rules

Dayanidhi Maran has written to the central government expressing concerns over the proposed Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 2026, urging authorities to reconsider the draft regulations in their current form.

In his communication, the DMK member of parliament recommended that the Centre withdraw the proposed rules and conduct a thorough review process. Maran emphasised the need for extensive consultation with independent animal welfare experts, veterinary professionals, scientists, and research institutions before finalising the regulations.

The MP also stressed the importance of involving civil society organisations in the review process, suggesting that stakeholder engagement would strengthen the regulatory framework. His intervention reflects concerns within the animal welfare community about the adequacy of existing consultation mechanisms for the new rules.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, currently forms the legal framework for animal protection in India. The proposed 2026 rules are intended to update regulations governing animal welfare standards and enforcement mechanisms.
