Marathi film 'Gondhal' named India's official entry for 2027 Oscars
The Film Federation of India has selected the Marathi-language drama 'Gondhal' as the country's official submission for the Academy Awards. The film, directed by Santosh Davakhar, was chosen from 33 entries to represent India at the 2027 ceremony.

The Film Federation of India announced Friday that 'Gondhal', a Marathi-language film directed by Santosh Davakhar, will serve as India's official entry for the 2027 Academy Awards. The selection committee, chaired by P Seshadri, selected the film from a competitive list of 33 submissions.
Set in rural Maharashtra, 'Gondhal' unfolds over a single night centred on a traditional ritual involving a newly married couple. The film marks the fourth Marathi-language production to secure India's official Oscar nomination, following 'Court' (2015), 'Harishchandrachi Factory' (2009), and 'Shwaas' (2005).
India's previous Oscar submission, director Neeraj Ghaywan's pandemic drama 'Homebound', failed to secure a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category. Despite multiple submissions over the years, no Indian film has yet won in this category. Only three Indian films have received nominations in the competition: Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India', Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay', and Ashutosh Gowariker's 'Lagaan'.
