SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga — The administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced a major infrastructure initiative to construct five Sabo Dams across Nueva Ecija province by 2027, part of broader efforts to address chronic flooding in the Central Luzon region.
Sabo Dams are specialized hydraulic structures designed to trap mud, sand, rocks, and other debris swept down from upstream mountain areas during periods of intense rainfall. By capturing this sediment load, the barriers reduce the volume and velocity of debris-laden water flows that reach downstream communities, thereby mitigating flood damage and protecting settlements.
The Nueva Ecija project represents a targeted investment in flood mitigation for one of the Philippines' most flood-prone regions. Central Luzon experiences regular seasonal flooding during the southwest monsoon and typhoon seasons, causing significant damage to agricultural lands, residential areas, and infrastructure.
The administration has not disclosed specific site locations, timelines for construction phases, or project costs. Officials have indicated the dams will be strategically positioned across mountain streams and river systems feeding into Nueva Ecija's lowland areas.
