MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. convened with leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) during a meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday, according to Presidential Peace Adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento.
Sarmiento, who attended the session, announced the meeting in a social media post on Thursday. The adviser did not immediately disclose details regarding the agenda or outcomes of the discussion between the President and the MILF delegation.
The meeting comes as the government continues diplomatic engagements with the MILF, the largest Muslim separatist organization in the southern Philippines. Such high-level consultations typically focus on implementation of the Bangsamoro peace agreement and related governance issues affecting the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
The Malacañan gathering represents part of ongoing efforts to maintain dialogue channels between the executive branch and the MILF, a group that has been central to peace negotiations in Mindanao for decades. No immediate statement was released regarding next steps in the peace process.
