The P91-million solar irrigation system was unveiled in Kananga as part of the administration's efforts to strengthen agricultural resilience against climate-related challenges. The facility harnesses renewable energy to pump water to farmland in the municipality, providing a sustainable solution to irrigation needs in the region.
The system will service two barangays in the area, directly supporting 66 farming families who depend on consistent water supply for their crops. With 155 hectares of agricultural land now equipped with reliable irrigation infrastructure, local farmers are expected to improve productivity and reduce crop losses during dry periods.
The inauguration comes amid growing concerns over prolonged drought conditions linked to El Niño phenomena affecting the Philippines. The national government's investment in solar-powered irrigation reflects its commitment to developing climate-adaptive agricultural infrastructure across the country.
The facility represents one of several renewable energy-based agricultural projects being rolled out to enhance farm productivity while reducing operational costs for rural communities. Officials said the solar system's long-term sustainability would help ensure consistent water availability for farmers in Leyte's agricultural sector.
