MANILA — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered a full investigation into allegations that some Filipino athletes at the ongoing Asian Games were inadequately supported, with reports indicating they had to cover food expenses from their own pockets.
Palace press officer Claire Castro disclosed the presidential directive, noting that Marcos is concerned about the welfare of athletes representing the country at the prestigious regional competition in Japan.
The inquiry was triggered by complaints from members of the Alas Pilipinas men's volleyball team, who reportedly incurred personal expenses for meals during the Games. Such costs are typically covered by delegation support services to allow athletes to focus fully on their competition.
The President's office did not immediately specify which other athletes or teams may have experienced similar issues. Officials are expected to coordinate with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee to determine the scope of the alleged support gaps and identify those responsible.
The investigation comes as the Philippines continues its campaign at the Asian Games, one of Asia's largest multi-sport events held once every four years.
