President Marcos made the pledge of support during the BARMM Parliament's first session on Friday, signaling the central government's determination to stand behind the autonomous region as it establishes its institutions. The commitment comes as the fledgling parliament takes its initial steps toward functioning as a self-governing entity within the Philippines' constitutional framework.
Parliament members elected Abdulraof Macacua as chief minister in a strong show of consensus, with 79 of the 80 elected representatives voting in his favor. Macacua will head the regional government and oversee its administration as it tackles the range of challenges facing the Bangsamoro region.
The inauguration of the BARMM Parliament represents a significant milestone in the Philippines' efforts to establish autonomous governance in Mindanao and address long-standing issues in the Muslim-majority region. The national government's backing signals continuity in support for the autonomy arrangement, which has been central to peace and development initiatives in the southern Philippines.
The Parliament's formation follows years of political negotiation and constitutional development aimed at giving the Bangsamoro people greater control over local governance and resource management. With the regional legislative body now operational, stakeholders will be watching closely to assess its ability to deliver services and advance economic development in the region.
