MANILA — Malacañan Palace said Thursday that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. respects his son's autonomy in matters concerning political party membership, as speculation mounts over House Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander "Sandro" Marcos's possible realignment.
Palace Press Secretary Claire Castro confirmed the president's confidence in the younger Marcos without elaborating on specific details of any party switch. "The President trusts Congressman Sandro to make the right decision," Castro said in remarks to reporters.
The statement comes amid reports that the House Majority Leader has joined Lakas-CMD, potentially departing from Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), the party led by former Vice President Sara Duterte.
The younger Marcos, who represents Ilocos Norte in Congress, has become an influential figure in the House of Representatives. His political moves often draw scrutiny given his position within both the legislative body and the administration.
Political realignments remain common in Philippine politics as lawmakers adjust their party affiliations to align with shifting political dynamics and legislative priorities. The Palace's statement underscores the administration's stance of allowing individual lawmakers freedom in such decisions.
