A male employee of the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) died following a bee attack at the organisation's farm in Ayer Putih, Terengganu, according to police reports.
The worker was engaged in honey collection activities at the facility when he was attacked by a swarm of bees, authorities said. Emergency services were alerted to the incident, but the man succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack.
The incident has raised questions about occupational safety protocols at the research facility, particularly regarding protective measures implemented during apiary-related work. Beekeeping operations, while generally routine, carry inherent risks when large swarms become defensive of their hives.
Police have classified the incident as a workplace fatality and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. Mardi officials have not yet issued a statement regarding the death or any safety reviews that may follow.
