Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has turned his frustration towards the club's hierarchy after the team's disappointing defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Argentine international used a post-match interview to voice concerns about the club's transfer strategy ahead of the campaign, despite securing qualification for European football's premier competition.
"I have to control myself a lot. But sometimes it's a reflection in the mirror of how is our club at the moment," Martinez told Amazon Prime following the loss. The defender acknowledged United's strong performance in the previous season but argued that more investment was required to compete at the highest level.
Martinez specifically directed his criticism at the club's recruitment approach, comparing United's summer business unfavourably to rival teams. "I expect more from our technical director. I would have to be honest, as the players, we have to do more, but it's just important when you make a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night," he stated.
The comments represent a rare public rebuke from a player and add to the scrutiny facing United's football hierarchy. While acknowledging the players' responsibility for performances on the pitch, Martinez emphasised that adequate squad depth and quality were essential prerequisites for competing in European competition.
The defeat marks a troubling start to United's campaign, with the club now facing mounting pressure to reinforce the squad and demonstrate the ambition required to challenge at the highest level.
