Maruti Suzuki ramps up investment as GST reform drives vehicle demand surge

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's leading passenger vehicle manufacturer, is stepping up its capital investment programme to capitalise on strengthening demand following the GST 2.0 reform, company leadership said on Tuesday. The tax rationalisation, which marked its first anniversary, has provided renewed momentum to India's automotive sector and consumer spending.

The company recorded 36 per cent year-on-year growth in passenger vehicle sales during the April-August 2026 period, according to managing director and chief executive officer Hisashi Takeuchi. More notably, sales in the entry-level segment surged over 96 per cent during the same timeframe, reflecting improved affordability and wider access to personal mobility among Indian consumers.

"The landmark GST reform has given fresh impetus to India's growth trajectory," Takeuchi said, highlighting how the tax restructuring has expanded the addressable market for affordable vehicles. "The entry segment's remarkable growth demonstrates the power of the Indian consumer and underscores the critical importance of affordability in driving mass motorisation."

The company's decision to accelerate capex reflects confidence in sustained demand momentum as improved tax efficiency makes vehicles more accessible to middle-income households. Industry analysts view the aggressive investment posture as a strategic bet on India's continued automotive expansion and the rising purchasing power of first-time vehicle buyers.
