Mass fish kill strikes Laguna de Bay; over 20 tons lost

MANILA — A fresh fish kill has devastated aquaculture operations in Laguna de Bay, with more than 20,000 kilograms of tilapia and bighead carp found dead across multiple fish cages in Jala-jala, Rizal. The incident affected over 30 fish cages spanning more than 7 hectares, according to reports from Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya), a national fishing community organization.

Initial damage assessments place losses at approximately 700,000 pesos, though final tallies remain incomplete as investigations continue. The mass mortality event marks another troubling episode in what has become a recurring problem for Laguna de Bay's aquaculture sector, which plays a vital role in the region's food supply and livelihoods.
