Massive 80-ton boulder collapses at US park after century

An 80-ton granite boulder collapsed at Polar Caves Park in Rumney, New Hampshire, on October 18, 2026, bringing down a wooden walkway and its safety railings in the process. The incident occurred without any reported injuries to visitors or staff.

The boulder, which had remained stable for more than 104 years, likely gave way due to erosion accelerated by weather conditions over time. Natural weathering processes gradually weakened the rock's structural integrity, ultimately leading to its sudden failure.

Park authorities have launched a comprehensive assessment of the site to determine the full extent of the damage and develop a remediation strategy. The collapse has prompted safety reviews across the facility to identify any other potential hazards.

Parks management has announced that repair and restoration work will be completed before the facility reopens to the public in spring 2027. Officials are working to ensure the park can safely welcome visitors once reconstruction efforts are finished.
