Massive sinkhole with ancient forest discovered in central Vietnam

The sinkhole, located within the UNESCO-listed Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh Province, represents a significant geological discovery for the region. The enormous depression measures approximately 190 meters across its widest point and 140 meters along its length, creating a vast natural amphitheater beneath the forest canopy.

At the bottom of the chasm lies an undisturbed primeval forest, suggesting the sinkhole has remained largely isolated from human activity. The dense vegetation and unique ecosystem within the depression demonstrate the park's extraordinary biodiversity and geological complexity.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, recognized as a World Heritage Site, is renowned for its karst landscape, extensive cave systems, and ecological significance. The discovery adds to the growing body of evidence that the park contains numerous large-scale geological formations yet to be fully explored and documented.

The exploration of such features provides researchers with opportunities to study pristine forest ecosystems and geological processes while contributing to scientific understanding of Southeast Asia's karst regions. The findings underscore the continued importance of protecting and studying Vietnam's natural heritage areas.
