Matale to host National Deepawali Festival 2026 in November

The Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs and the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs have announced plans to organize the National Deepawali Festival 2026 in Matale. The celebration will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Sri Muthumariamman Temple.

The initiative represents a collaborative effort involving the Matale District Secretariat and the Management Board of the Sri Muthumariamman Temple, signaling coordinated support from both governmental and religious sectors. The venue selection underscores the temple's significance as a focal point for Hindu religious and cultural observances in the region.

Deepawali, the Festival of Lights, holds considerable importance across South Asia as a celebration of the victory of light over darkness. By designating the event as the National Deepawali Festival, authorities aim to recognize and honor the cultural heritage and traditions of Sri Lanka's Hindu community.

The morning-focused timing of the four-hour event suggests a structured program designed to facilitate community participation and ceremonial observations at the temple.
