Mayawati Demands Akhilesh Apologise to Jat Community over Charan Singh

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday levelled fresh accusations against Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, demanding a public apology to the Jat community and the family of former Prime Minister Charan Singh. Mayawati's remarks underscore deepening tensions between two major regional players in Uttar Pradesh politics.

The BSP leader alleged that the Samajwadi Party has maintained a pattern of narrow-minded thinking rooted in caste-based animosity. According to Mayawati, this antagonism extends beyond rival political organisations to encompass the party's own allies, revealing what she characterised as systemic prejudice within SP's functioning.

Charan Singh, who served as Prime Minister in 1979-80 and was a prominent Jat leader, remains a significant figure in the state's political landscape. Mayawati's invocation of his legacy appears designed to mobilise support among the influential Jat community while highlighting what she views as disrespect shown by rival parties.

The attack comes as both parties compete for influence in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. Mayawati's comments reflect ongoing friction between regional allies and opponents, with caste-based political calculations continuing to shape alliances and electoral strategies across the state.
