Mayawati urges politicians to avoid divisive tactics over hijab issue

Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati on Tuesday distanced her outfit from what she characterised as divisive political tactics surrounding the hijab row, emphasising her party's commitment to protecting the interests of all sections of society.

Addressing the controversy, Mayawati reiterated that the BSP operates on Ambedkarite principles that guarantee respect for all communities and ensure the safety of their lives, property and religious freedoms. She cautioned political parties against exploiting such matters for narrow electoral gains.

The BSP chief's statement comes amid ongoing tensions over hijab restrictions in educational institutions across several states, which has emerged as a contentious political issue. Mayawati's remarks suggest the party's opposition to communalising such matters for political advantage.

Underscoring the BSP's ideological moorings in B.R. Ambedkar's vision of social justice, Mayawati stressed that her party would continue to stand as a guardian of constitutional rights and minority interests. The statement reflects the BSP's historical positioning as an advocate for marginalised communities across the Indian subcontinent.
