Mayon Volcano Alert Raised to Level 3 Following Moderate Eruption
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology elevated Mayon Volcano's alert status on Friday after a moderately explosive eruption sent ash plumes 3,000 meters into the air. The upgrade from Level 2 to Level 3 signals a heightened risk of further volcanic activity.

LEGAZPI CITY — Authorities have escalated their alert level for Mayon Volcano following a moderately explosive eruption that occurred at 11:53 a.m. on October 30. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the volcano's status from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 3, reflecting increased seismic and volcanic activity at the active stratovolcano in Albay province.
The eruption produced a dense ash column that rose rapidly to approximately 3,000 meters above the volcano's summit. The ash plume was visible across the surrounding region, marking a significant escalation from the low-level activity that had characterized the volcano in recent weeks.
Alert Level 3 indicates that Mayon Volcano is exhibiting moderate unrest with increased risk of eruption. Under this alert status, authorities typically expand restricted access zones around the volcano and intensify monitoring efforts. The upgrade prompts renewed vigilance among residents in nearby communities and heightened coordination among disaster management agencies.
Phivolcs continues to closely monitor seismic tremors and volcanic gas emissions as scientists assess the likelihood and potential magnitude of subsequent eruptions. The agency has advised the public to remain alert to official updates and heed all evacuation orders should they be issued by local government units.
