Mbappé's China storm: is La Liga really losing 400 million?
A post claiming La Liga could lose €400 million in China drew more than 670,000 views on X. The sponsorship cuts and the CCTV blackout are real, but the 400 million is an estimate of the whole TV deal's value, and the main contract is still running.

"La Liga could lose up to €400 million in China by 2030." That single line, posted on X on Tuesday 27 October by a football fan account, had been viewed more than 670,000 times by Sunday morning. Other posts went further, claiming Kylian Mbappé himself had lost 400 million euros "in 3 seconds". The anger in China is real, and so are the cancelled contracts. The 400 million figure is something else.

What actually happened

The storm began with a podcast clip that emerged online on Monday 26 October. In it, the France captain and Real Madrid forward laughed about a meme that had put his face on what he called, in Reuters' rendering of his words, "some guy — I think he's a Chinese dictator." The image resembled Mao Zedong, modern China's founding leader. Mbappé did not name Mao in the clip, but in China jokes about Mao remain a social taboo, and the reference was read instantly.

The commercial response was fast. By Tuesday, dairy giant Mengniu, cheese maker Shanghai Milkground Food Tech and drinks group Eastroc Beverage said they were ceasing all cooperation with Mbappé, effective immediately, citing "zero tolerance for any words or actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people". China's state television halted broadcasts of La Liga matches and pulled advertisements featuring the player. Konami said the Chinese versions of eFootball, eFootball Online and eFootball: King of Collectibles had stopped producing player items, character cards and other content related to him.

Mbappé apologised in a statement: "My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world." La Liga and Real Madrid also apologised, and league president Javier Tebas met China's ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, on 28 October.

Where the 400 million comes from

The viral number is not a loss anyone has counted. It traces to a market estimate, reported by the Spanish outlet Vozpópuli and relayed by Mundo Deportivo, of what La Liga's entire television business in China could be worth through 2030: up to €400 million, or about €100 million a season. La Liga has not disclosed the value of its Chinese deals, and there is no public breakdown by broadcaster.

More importantly, the main contract has not been torn up. China Mobile's streaming platform Migu became La Liga's exclusive new media partner in mainland China in August, with all 380 matches a season through 2029/30. By Thursday, according to Mundo Deportivo, Migu had removed just one game from its schedule: Real Madrid's visit to Racing Santander, played today, 1 November, while keeping the other nine fixtures of the round. A broadcast suspension does not automatically mean payments stop; the contract terms are private.

For Mbappé personally, Le Monde has estimated the combined value of his Chinese sponsorship agreements at about €6.7 million. That is real money, but it is nowhere near the 400 million in the viral posts. Other claims circulating on X, including a 65% drop in his revenue, a Wall Street sell-off and his removal from FIFA games, have no support from any reputable source.

On Saturday, Real Madrid manager José Mourinho said the club and player had reacted immediately and appropriately. "As far as we're concerned, that's it," he told reporters.

Our read

The real cost here is not one footballer's endorsements. It is the reminder that Beijing can dim a foreign league's reach overnight, through a state broadcaster and a state-owned platform, while keeping the contract, and the leverage, in place. For clubs, leagues and brands across Asia's biggest market, the lesson is less about memes than about who holds the switch.
