MCA, DAP leaders spar over seat concessions in Melaka polls

MCA president Wee Ka Siong and Melaka DAP chief Khoo Ho Geok have traded criticism over the allocation of state assembly seats to their respective electoral partners, with each leader framing the concessions as a matter of organisational pride.

The dispute centres on both parties being required to surrender constituencies to allied partners contesting in the Melaka state polls. Wee and Khoo have publicly questioned the arrangement, with each accusing the other's party of compromising their dignity through the seat-sharing formula.

The row underscores broader friction within Malaysia's coalition structures as parties negotiate representation ahead of state-level contests. Such negotiations frequently pit parties' desires for maximum seat allocation against the electoral mathematics of maintaining broader alliances.

Both the MCA and DAP are members of separate coalitions—MCA within Barisan Nasional and DAP within Pakatan Harapan—making their relationship in Melaka particularly complex. The spat suggests ongoing difficulty in harmonising interests within these broader political arrangements at the state level.

The Melaka state elections are expected to test the stability of both major coalitions and their ability to manage internal disputes over seat distribution.
