MCMC blocks 101.66 million spoof calls in six-month period

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked 101.66 million spoof calls between February and August this year, according to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. The substantial figure reflects the effectiveness of a new collaborative initiative launched at the beginning of 2024 involving multiple network operators working in concert to combat voice-based fraud.

The coordinated approach represents a shift towards industry-wide cooperation in tackling the persistent problem of spoofed calls, which have become increasingly sophisticated and widespread across Malaysia. By engaging telecommunications providers directly in the filtering and blocking process, the MCMC has been able to implement real-time detection systems that intercept fraudulent calls before they reach consumers.

Spoof calling, where scammers disguise their identity by manipulating caller ID information, has emerged as a major concern for Malaysian consumers and authorities. The blocking initiative aims to protect the public from financial fraud, identity theft, and other crimes commonly perpetrated through spoofed calls.

The MCMC's success in blocking over 100 million calls underscores the potential of collaborative regulatory approaches in combating telecommunications fraud. The agency has indicated that the initiative will continue as part of its broader consumer protection mandate.
