MCMC blocks over 101 million scam calls in seven-month crackdown

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced the significant achievement in its ongoing fight against telecommunications fraud, working alongside local telcos to identify and block suspicious call traffic. The seven-month operation from February through August 2024 demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between the regulator and industry partners to combat call spoofing and related scams that have plagued Malaysian consumers.

Call spoofing, the practice of falsifying caller identification information to mask the true origin of calls, has become an increasingly common tool for scammers attempting to defraud victims by impersonating legitimate organisations or individuals. The blockade focused on intercepting calls routed through unauthorised gateways that facilitate such fraudulent activities, preventing them from reaching their intended targets.

The MCMC's collaborative approach with telecommunications companies has proven instrumental in enhancing Malaysia's defensive infrastructure against scam calls. By sharing intelligence and implementing real-time filtering mechanisms at the network level, telcos have strengthened their ability to protect subscribers from falling victim to phone-based fraud schemes.
