MCMC escalates WhatsApp account fraud cases to Meta
Malaysia's communications regulator has escalated multiple cases involving unauthorised WhatsApp account access to Meta, the platform's parent company. The move comes as authorities urge users to rely exclusively on official WhatsApp recovery channels to protect their accounts.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has formally referred several cases concerning WhatsApp account compromise to Meta Platforms, signalling heightened regulatory attention to account security issues affecting local users.
The referrals follow reports of users losing access to their WhatsApp accounts through unauthorised means. The MCMC has advised affected users to utilise only official WhatsApp verification and account recovery mechanisms to regain access or confirm their account ownership.
WhatsApp account takeovers have become an increasing concern for users across the region, with fraudsters typically exploiting weak authentication processes or phishing tactics to gain unauthorised access. Users who suspect compromise are urged to immediately update their passwords and enable two-factor authentication through WhatsApp's official security features.
The MCMC's escalation to Meta underscores the regulator's commitment to safeguarding Malaysian consumers' digital security and holding tech platforms accountable for protecting user data. Meta has not yet publicly responded to the regulatory submission.
Users experiencing account access issues should visit WhatsApp's official help centre or contact the platform directly rather than seeking assistance through third-party channels, authorities cautioned.
