The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into deepfake or AI-manipulated content allegedly featuring former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad circulating online. The regulator's action underscores growing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence technology to create misleading video or audio content of public figures, which could potentially spread misinformation and undermine public discourse.
The probe comes as authorities worldwide intensify scrutiny of synthetic media and its implications for election integrity and public trust. Malaysia has previously taken action against various forms of false and misleading content under existing communications legislation.
In a separate development, prominent human rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim announced her decision to join Parti Bumiputera Merdeka (PBM). Her move represents a notable political development, bringing her activism and advocacy experience into the formal party political arena.
The announcements reflect broader issues dominating Malaysia's information landscape and political sphere, including digital misinformation and shifting political alignments among civil society figures.
